A Haringey landlord, alongside three directors from two separate letting agencies, has been slapped with fines totalling £27,500. This penalty arose from their failure to secure the mandatory House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) license for a property in Tottenham. An HMO licence was required as the property housed eight tenants from different households.

Haringey Council rigorously upholds the principle that landlords and letting agents must meet the relevant safety and management standards for their properties. However, in this particular scenario, both the landlord and the agents flagrantly disregarded their legal duties, thereby putting the tenants' welfare at risk.

In light of the licensing infraction, an agreement was reached to settle the fine through a series of instalments. To thwart any evasion of the financial penalty, the enforcing officer, in collaboration with Companies House, intervened to prevent one of the letting companies from declaring insolvency.

Eubert Malcolm, the assistant director for stronger and safer communities at Haringey Council, emphasized, “As shown with this case, we are committed to ensuring homes in Haringey are safe and regulated for our residents. It is imperative that landlords and letting agents adhere to the legal requirements to not only avoid prosecution, but also protect and maintain high housing standards in Haringey. Our residents have always been at the core of everything we do, and we will continue to go above and beyond for their safety.”
