5.25% BoE Base Rate Remains

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has once again opted to maintain the base rate at 5.25%, marking the fifth consecutive hold. This decision follows a sequence of 14 successive rate increases, with the first pause occurring in September 2023. The committee's choice is underscored by recent inflation figures, which, while lower than anticipated, remain above the Bank’s 2% target.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has reiterated the institution’s stance, emphasizing the need for solid evidence of inflationary control before considering rate adjustments.

Nicholas Mendes, mortgage technical manager at John Charcol, offered insight into market expectations, stating: “The Bank of England had already indicated that there would be no surprise rate cut this month, but it is anticipated that the first reduction will happen imminently. Market sentiment, however, suggests that any reduction in the bank rate is not likely until at least June, with a growing proportion of investors now eyeing August."

Mendes also noted the influence of the US market and the historical alignment of decisions with those of the Federal Reserve, which maintained its own rates unchanged.

Following the release of inflation data, NatWest promptly adjusted their 5-year fixed products downward, signalling potential movements among other lenders in the coming weeks. Mendes projected cautious optimism, highlighting the gradual return of confidence to the market. He cautioned against expecting immediate results but expressed confidence in the possibility of a sub-4% 5-year fixed rate in the foreseeable future, based on current pricing trends.
