Landlords & Investors

The landlords of a large HMO property in Haringey have been fined £13,500 due to their failure to address multiple hazards within the property.
Improvement Notices under the Housing Act 2004 were issued to the landlords after significant dangers were identified throughout the building, including in communal areas.
Furthermore, half of the flats in the property were found to suffer from damp and mould, presenting considerable health risks to the tenants.
Despite receiving numerous warnings, the landlords did not take the necessary steps to fix these problems. When landlords do not act voluntarily or when property conditions endanger occupants, the council typically enforces strict measures.
In this case, the landlords were given ample time to comply with the Housing Act Notices. Their ongoing noncompliance led to a Civil Penalty Notice amounting to £13,500.
Eubert Malcolm, assistant director for stronger and safer communities at Haringey Council, stated: “This case highlights the importance of maintaining safe living conditions for all residents. Our incredible enforcement team are working tirelessly to ensure landlords in Haringey meet their legal obligations. We will continue to take robust action against those who neglect their responsibilities and enforce the law to protect tenants’ rights and wellbeing.”
This enforcement action underscores the council's commitment to ensuring safe living conditions and holding landlords accountable for their responsibilities.
