A recent survey conducted by NatWest and S&P Global has shed light on a notable trend among UK renters facing potential increases in rent. According to the Greener Homes Attitudes Tracker, a substantial 75% of such renters are urging landlords to implement sustainable improvements in their properties.

The survey indicates a discernible demand for energy-efficient features in rental homes, particularly considering the typically inferior insulation levels compared to owner-occupied residences. As 63% of renters brace for anticipated rent hikes in the next year, a significant three-quarters of this group are specifically advocating for eco-friendly property upgrades as a means of mitigating financial strains.

Interestingly, the survey also reveals that only 20% of homeowners have plans to undertake sustainable modifications to their residences in the coming year. The primary deterrents cited by this homeowner demographic are the perceived costs and potential disruptions associated with such initiatives.

Examining the financial landscape, the survey provides insights into household energy bills, noting that 23% of households utilizing mains gas and electricity expend between £100-£149 monthly on energy consumption.

Furthermore, the report highlights a growing awareness of environmentally conscious behaviors, such as increased use of public transport and a rise in clothing recycling practices.

Lloyd Cochrane, the Head of Mortgages at NatWest, commented on the findings, stating, “Cost and disruption continue to be major barriers for homeowners looking to make sustainable changes to their homes.” In response to these challenges, NatWest has introduced the Home Energy Hub, aimed at facilitating and financing necessary eco-friendly renovations for homeowners.
