The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) has expressed its appreciation for the recent statement made by the Labour Party regarding rent controls.

Following an initial commitment by Labour to regulate escalating rental costs if it secures the next General Election, Shadow Housing Secretary Lisa Nandy has opposed the idea of rent control or freezing measures.

During a conference, Nandy rejected the proposed rent controls, asserting that they would not address the ongoing crisis and may potentially contribute to higher rates of homelessness.

Ben Beadle, the CEO of NRLA, concurred with Labour's perspective, emphasizing that rent controls would not effectively tackle the rental supply crisis faced by tenants across the country. Beadle stressed the need for a comprehensive plan to augment the availability of homes for private rent, along with other housing options. Additionally, he called for the unfreezing of housing benefit rates without delay to provide support to vulnerable tenants struggling to access the rental market.

Nandy had previously commented on the government's mortgage lender charter, suggesting that these measures should be made obligatory to achieve the desired outcomes for mortgage borrowers facing difficulties.
