The Renters’ Reform Coalition, comprised of 20 organizations advocating for private renters, has issued a response to remarks made by the deputy Prime Minister on Wednesday, April 24th, regarding the abolition of no-fault evictions.

During Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden asserted that no-fault evictions would be abolished "today," in response to a question from Angela Rayner about a specific timeline for their elimination.

Tom Darling, campaign manager at the Renters’ Reform Coalition, countered Dowden's assertion, stating, “Michael Gove u-turned this morning to say he couldn’t guarantee the end of no-fault evictions." Darling further added, “The Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden knows that no-fault evictions won’t be abolished today, so it’s disingenuous for him to say the practice will end today."

These remarks underscore the frustration among renters facing eviction proceedings. Darling emphasized, “Renters facing these evictions up and down the country tomorrow, who have already been so badly let down by endless delays caused by conservative landlord MPs, don’t deserve to have their hopes artificially raised yet again."

The statements follow Housing Secretary Michael Gove's inability earlier in the day to provide assurance regarding the abolition of no-fault evictions by the General Election, marking a shift from his previous stance.
