Rental Market

A recent survey conducted by the TDS Charitable Foundation has highlighted a concerning issue regarding private renters. According to the survey, half of the respondents, totalling over 2,000 tenants, expressed uncertainty regarding where to seek assistance if faced with unresolved property issues from their landlord or letting agent.
Dr. Jennifer Harris, head of policy and research at TDS Group, emphasized the significance of accessible information for tenants, particularly in light of the impending Renters (Reform) Bill. "The Renters (Reform) Bill will see the biggest shake-up of the private rented sector for a generation," she stated. "However, it runs the risk of failing to achieve its objectives if tenants do not feel confident about where to go for help when things go wrong."
The survey findings underscore a demand for clearer guidance, with 48% of tenants expressing a desire for better information on lodging complaints. Additionally, 69% of respondents indicated a willingness to utilize a dedicated website for resolving tenancy issues.
Addressing this need, the TDS Charitable Foundation is developing the 'My Housing Issue' Gateway, aimed at serving as a central resource for tenants to address their concerns effectively. This initiative comes at a critical juncture as legislative changes seek to establish a Decent Homes Standard for rentals and implement measures against discrimination in the sector.
